What is the Coffee Skills Program (CSP)

The SCA’s Coffee Skills Program is an international certified program that consists of education in the following 6 specialties within the coffee industry:

  • Introduction to Coffee
  • Barista Skills
  • Brewing
  • Green Coffee
  • Roasting
  • Sensory Skills

Together these modules of learning are known as the SCA Coffee Skills Program. Students can take advantage of learning through three stages of knowledge and skills in each module: Foundation, Intermediate and Professional.

We offer training in 3 specialty coffee modules:

Introduction to coffee

Learn about coffee’s journey from its origins in Ethiopia to the major commodity it is today. From growing the cherries through grading, roasting, and brewing, this module provides an overview of the coffee value chain.

(Max 10 CSP Points)

Learn the practical skills you need behind the espresso bar: learn how to set your grinder, milk techniques and latte art, health and safety, customer service, and basic business practices.

Learn about the roasting process, including roast cycle, roast levels, identifying defects, the physical changes that beans undergo during the roasting process, as well as workspace management and lean production.

Foundation Level, Intermediate Level & Professional Level (Max 40 CSP Points)

Learn about the variety of methods for brewing coffee and the brewing variables that affect quality. The Brewing module provides hands-on learning on grind profiles, brewing methods, measuring coffee strength and charting a coffee’s extraction.

How can i earn my CSP Diploma?

Each of the specialist modules is available at three different levels(Foundation, Intermediate & Professional), with points attached to every level. Once you have achieved 100 points, you will be awarded the SCA Coffee Skills Diploma. You choose the modules that fit your interests and needs.

Meet your trainer

Stevo Kuhn loves coffee almost as much as teaching. With his degree in education and his immense passion for people he is a very relatable individual in the training set up, communicating in ways that appeal to many learning styles.

His love for coffee, people and teaching is the reason why he such an exceptional barista and trainer.

Stevo is also a competitive barista. He is the 2019 Central Region Barista Champion and at the 2020 South African Barista competition he placed 2nd. Taking hold of the best espresso and best technical awards.

He has worked with both national and international brands, helping them train their baristas to make the most of their environment and to optimize their skills. This has lead to many opportunities across South Africa and other parts of the world.
